Cisco WAN Automation Engine (Cisco)

The Cisco WAN Automation Engine is a powerful, flexible software-defined networking (SDN) platform. It abstracts and simplifies your WAN environment while making it fully open and programmable. You can deploy and optimize innovative new services, such as global load balancing, bandwidth calendaring, bandwidth on demand, and premium network routing.

See what’s possible with enhanced visibility and control of the underlying physical and virtual network infrastructure. Third-party research demonstrates the financial benefits of SDN in the WAN. Read ACG Research's analysis of four Cisco WAN Automation Engine use cases.

Increase Visibility and Control

Offer Bandwidth-on-Demand

Use the Cisco WAN Automation Engine for bandwidth scheduling, enhanced visibility, and much more.

Deploy Services Faster

Bring SDN-based advances to your WAN.

Features and Capabilities

You can now automate time-intensive manual operations in service provider networks with the Cisco WAN Automation Engine. Tasks that can be automated include managing, controlling, analyzing, and improving network performance and capacity planning. Here are some potential use cases:

Demand Admission Requests

Service providers can intelligently consider content location as well as network impact using the Cisco WAN Automation Engine when placing the demand. At the same time, you can help ensure the network stays healthy.

Bandwidth Scheduling

When an enterprise customer wants to move a cache on demand, the Cisco WAN Automation Engine first determines the best path. Then, it programs a label-switched path using Path Computation Element Protocol (PCEP).

Load Balancing Label Switched Paths

It’s important for service providers to efficiently use expensive resources, such as high–cost or transoceanic links. The Cisco WAN Automation Engine helps ensure that the most expensive network resources are fully optimized, assigning best-load share metrics using PCEP.

Policy-Based Path Planning

To meet service-level agreements (SLAs), service providers can use the Cisco WAN Automation Engine to provision disjoint LSPs from an access to an aggregation router. The engine can also help ensure they remain on different paths even under failure conditions.
